Sunday afternoons are just the best, especially when I am home with the fam. I can smell some aroma of jrice in the kitchen, it’s about to be a perfect day 😅. Mama don’t miss with that jrice ever, apart from times it’s too spicy lol…

I just got off the phone with Niyi and he asked if I have seen Kanye’s new interview, I was like wordd??… there is a new kanye interview out.. say less, I just opened my laptop and started watching, few minutes in and it’s iconic as ever, my goat dont disappoint.

I am about 30 mins into the interview and kanye starts talking about the game changers in hip hop, he had mentioned Chief Keef, Future, Souja Boy, HOV and broo a mad nostalgia just hit me of back in the day when I first discovered hip hop. So I paused the interview and went straight to make a playlist of hip hop records I have very found memories of and here I am writing about each record….

  1. Big Brother — Kanye: My fondest memory of this record was when I was in high school and we would have summer school, that was the best time ever for music for me… Cus we could bring phones to school and then we had folks from other schools come to our school. One of the friends I had made, shared a bunch of jams with me via bluetooth on my Blackberry Curve 3 then lol, I remember I had gone home and had this particular song on replay. I loved how Kanye spoke about his experience meeting Jay for the first time and playing his beats to him, at the time I hadn’t checked out any HOV album but this record really made me go check for Jay Z records lol.
  2. John — Lil Wanye & Rick Ross: Bruh this one is so special because I can remember clearly the damage this song did to my ears at the time lool I always blasted into on 100% volume and I had very shitty headphones 😂. We used to have this french village thing that year where other schools would come to a closed space that was in Badagry and we’d all just socialize and make new friends. This was the song of that summer, I remember some guys from St Gregory performing it those folks were so fucking cool lol. All the while I actually thought Rick Ross was on a wheel chair because of the music video lol.
  3. Juicy — Notorious BIG: this one was my gateman in high school, back in the day we used to get to school really early cus we’d follow my dad when he was going to work, so we spent a lot of time with the gateman lol and dude was a hip hop head — Oga Garba lol shouts to him mehn. This was his anthem lol and I feel in love with the record.
  4. Monster — Kanye: Who didnt know this song lool, bruh this song was demonic lol, cus I just always wanted to punch something after/while I listen to this lol. Nicki Minaj’s verse had it for me:)))
  5. Teach me how to Jerk — Audio Push: 2009! rah! who didn’t jerk or dougie, this was the coolest dance, girls use to really like me cus I was like the best guy at jerking and doing the pin drop lool. This song, Crickets by Audio Push, Teach me how to Dougie by Cali Swag District were my jamss!
  6. Love — Mos Def: My older cousin had put me to this when we went for holiday’s in their house in Ibadan, I remember him playing it in his whip then, that green Peugeot loool…
  7. Figaro — MF Doom: Of course Doom had to be on this list😅, this was an earlier listen I think 2014/2015, I remember my coursemate giving me a bunch of songs on my harddrive and I came across MF Doom and Dilla.. The rhyme scheme on Figaro had my mouth open all the time lool Figaro and Accordion 🔥. RIP Doom:)
  8. Chum — Earl Sweatshirt: Man Odd Future, the blueprint. I don’t know why I love this song but this one is so close to my heart this and Mantra from I dont like shit album
  9. Mural — Lupe Fiasco: I am not sure where I was when I first heard this record but it had to make this list. A classic!
